Becoming a Freshman in high-school can be quite an adjustment, and we don’t want to overload our students, however we must remind them that their ultimate goal for high-school is to graduate and head off to college or some kind of training beyond high-school. This doesn’t mean that they should be concerned with filling out college applications or writing their admissions essays yet, but could include talking to a counselor or teacher about college, keeping an eye on their grades, and being involved.

Now that the first semester is over and students have had time to adjust and explore, now would be a great time to remind your student of that ultimate goal. When considering how to talk to your student about college and his/her future one resource to utilize is Big Future, from the College Board.

Below is a link to an article about getting your 9th grader to think about what is to come, I recommend reading this article and going on to the Big Future website. Big Future is a tool for not only parents, but should students as well. It is user friendly and has information for various age-groups!

‘Tis the Season!

With the new year rapidly approaching, many of us are considering our resolutions for the up-coming year. MICAN is going to challenge everyone to fill out their FAFSA as a new year resolution! January marks the beginning of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This January, all of the MICAN schools will be participating in the FAFSA Completion Project, which aims at getting all of our students within the Montcalm and Ionia area to file their FAFSA. There is a 90% correlation with those who finish their FAFSA application and those who enroll in college.

The MICAN mobile unit will also start traveling this January to various locations within Montcalm and Ionia counties. Anyone who needs assistance applying to college or filing financial aid paperwork can come to the mobile unit, where we have lap-tops and internet access in order to help those in need of help! This is an absolutely FREE resource for those interested. Locations and dates will be posted soon!

Happy Holidays!

When working with students and families, one main them always pops up. That theme is “how do we pay for college?” This is a huge concern for a lot of families, however there are a lot of different options to consider, the biggest thing is finding that option that works the best for YOU! One of the best ways to get financial aid is to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a free application that students and their parents fill out each spring, starting in January – March 1st. By simply filling out this form students and their families can find out how much federal aid they qualify for. Even if your student “doesn’t” qualify for federal aid, many schools are still looking for students to have a FAFSA on file in order to award scholarship money to students, so make sure that your student fills out this form each year!  MICAN is working hard to create events prior to and during the FAFSA season so families or students who need help filling out these forms can get the help they need!  Below is a video on the process of finacial aid brought to you by the Federal Student Aid an Office of the U.S. Department of Education!

If you have any questions about the Financial Aid Process please feel free to contact MICAN at any point in time!
